Pete Rozelle, the Commissioner of the NFL in 1963, consulted with a friend in the Kennedy administration who said the games should go on before deciding that the games would be played on the Sunday following JFK's death. The friend, Kennedy press secretary Pierre Salinger, said years later in an interview "Absolutely, it was the right decision. I've never questioned it. This country needed some normalcy, and football, which is a very important game in our society, helped provide it."

Upon his retirement, Rozelle said it was his biggest mistake as commissioner.

The American Football League cancelled all games scheduled for that weekend.
