∙ 13y agoIf the softball was measured in time then check you stop watch. The ball speed at a softball pitching distance would be traveling several hundred miles per hour at time stated. A very fast softball pitcher will have a release to catcher time around .5 seconds.

∙ 13y agoon it's way as it leaves the hand. It can be a lot less in speed as it crosses the plate. A faster fast ball is easier to hit because it does not change height and direction much which means the hitter should swing into the ball with better contact. The best pitchers are the ones that can throw change ups and curves and when he throws fast balls , he is better if he can spot them just at the edge of the plate.
College fastpitch pitchers average in the 70s. MLB players pitch in the 90s and occassionly top 100mph.

Most of them throw a fastball at around 65 mph. There have been a few exceptional pitchers that could reach 71 or 72 mph. Jenny Finch among them.
In softball, the ball is bigger. Baseball pitchers pitch the ball overhand while softball pitchers pitch underhand. Baseball is more of a boys sport and softball is generally more for girls.
