This problem can be defined by 2 equations. 5X + 3Y = 23 5X + 1Y = 20 Solve for X & Y, where X is cost of Puck and Y is cost of Stick. I haven't done the algrebra, but intuitively it looks like the answer is $1.

5p + 3s = 23; 5p + 1s = 20. By subtracting the second equation from the second, we see that 2s = 3. Simplifying leads to s = 1.5, or one stick costs $1.50. Reapplying this to the second equation, 5p + 1.5 = 20; subtracting 1.5 from each side gives 5p = 18.50, and dividing through means that one puck costs $3.70.
